McDonald's has brought back its World Menu Heist promotion in the UK and added a partnership with language-learning app Duolingo, according to tmsw. The campaign, which places dishes from McDonald's markets around the world on UK menus, runs from September 22 to November 16. The Duolingo element launched on October 20, partway through the promotion.
Under the tie-up, customers who sign in to the McDonald's app can redeem an offer for 2,000 MyMcDonald's Rewards points, tmsw reports. In return they receive a unique code for three months of Super Duolingo, the app's paid tier. The code also opens special practice areas designed to help users revisit mistakes they made in earlier lessons. A total of 300,000 codes is available during the promotion, while stocks last.
Why it matters
The collaboration is a loyalty play rather than a menu change. tms, the agency that worked with McDonald's on the campaign, said the goal was to align the MyMcDonald's Rewards program with the brand's "Unashamedly McDonald's" positioning, according to tmsw. That approach calls for partners that can lift a promotional moment and hand customers rewards that feel worth the attention.
Duolingo's arrival midway through the run is intended to keep the campaign in front of customers for longer than a single menu launch would, tmsw reports. Rather than front-loading all activity at the start, the second partner gives the promotion a fresh reason to be talked about in its later weeks.
tms said it was looking for a rewards partner that made the heist feel bigger and gave fans the sense they were working around the system by touring the world from their own tables. The agency described Duolingo as the right match for that idea, per tmsw.
What is on the menu
The second World Menu Heist lineup stays available until November 16. It includes the Peach McFizz from Singapore, Chicken McWings with Szechuan Sauce from China, the McExtreme from Spain and the Twix McFlurry from Germany, according to tmsw.
The items are drawn from McDonald's menus in those markets and sold in the UK for the length of the campaign. The promotion takes its name from the idea of customers sampling dishes that would otherwise require travel to try.
How the rewards mechanics work
The Duolingo offer sits inside the McDonald's app and is paid for with loyalty points rather than cash. Customers need 2,000 MyMcDonald's Rewards points to claim it, tmsw reports. Each redemption produces a code that can be used for three months of Super Duolingo.
The practice areas attached to the code are aimed at learners who want to go back over material they previously got wrong. The 300,000-code pool is finite, so the offer ends once the allocation is used up or the promotion closes.
tms framed the partnership as part of a wider effort to build brand collaborations that deepen customer engagement and add value through cultural relevance, according to tmsw. The agency used the campaign as an example of how a loyalty program can be tied to a partner that fits a brand's tone.
The promotion closes on November 16, when both the international menu items and the Duolingo redemption window are due to end.
